Developed from the period of Kandyan kings, the Kandyan dance imitates movements of animals such as the elephant and the peacock. The costumes of Kandyan dancers are colourful with elaborate head dresses and sparkling adornments for ears, neck and arms. The performance is accompanied by the rhythms of drums called "geta bera".
