A beautiful representation of the famous Moonstone step, a large semi-circular carved step originally decorated with a mosaic of moonstones, at the temple in Anuradhapura. The six to seven carved rows of the moonstone step are highly significant to Sri Lankan Buddhists. The central lotus flower represents Nirvana, the undulating scrolls of leaves and flowers symbolise desire or craving, the swans or geese are the sign of purity, wholeness and goodness, the four beasts - elephant, lion, horse and bull symbolise the four mortal perils of birth, disease, decay and death, and the outer arc of flower petals symbolises the fires of worldly existence. This beautiful motif is believed to bring good luck and prosperity.
